Tremors

Today was rather eventful... well maybe just at night. That's cos at 7 plus, we felt rather strong tremors. At first, we didn't really realize it until my maid came out of her room and said, "Did you feel that? It was going on for a while already." We stayed still to feel it. The rocking chair i was sitting on was rocking a little on its own without me rocking it and the wind chimes were moving without any wind. My mum also felt dizzy. Then, an alarm on the ground floor was activated. So, we decided to go downstairs. My dad could not be bothered and said he was going to sleep. owells... Actually we felt tremors before this year, but they happened for a few seconds and stopped as quickly as they came. However this time, it was continuous, so it was the first time we went down with the rest of the residents.

Down at the park, there were already quite a lot of people gathering there. We just waited...and discussed...and waited. My mum and I coud still feel the slight tremors from the ground, they were not as strong since we were on the ground floor. After a while, we decided to go back. Until then, the alarm was still going on. My mum said the tremors shook the building, so it went off. The lift was also not working... must have been caused by the tremors too. Then, a couple of policemen arrived and came to say that it was safe to go back but if we find any cracks, we should call the police to inform them. Though the lifts were working already, we walk up using the stairs... luckily we are only living on the 10th floor.

Later on, I found out that the continuous tremors were caused by double quakes that struck both Jakarta (both 7.9 on richter scale) and Sumatra (8.0 on the richter scale). The latest news is that there was a small tsunami off the coast of Padang (as in the town in Indonesia) at around nine. It was about 9 feet.

[JAKARTA : Indonesia issued a second tsunami alert on Wednesday after a 6.6-magnitude aftershock struck off the west coast of Sumatra following a massive quake hours earlier, the meteorology agency said. The quake hit at 9:40 pm (1440 GMT), about 70 kilometres (45 miles) southwest of the town of Bengkulu, at a depth of 18 kilometres, the agency said by short text message. "Tsunami potential, to be forwarded to the public," the message said. Earlier, the Indonesian meteorology agency had called of its tsunami warning following a massive 8.2-magnitude earthquake which had struck off the west coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island. That quake toppled buildings and had triggering a tsunami alert across the Indian Ocean region.]
